Meeting: Organized by MENA Prison Forum & UMAM D&R
SYRIAN PRISONS BETWEEN MEMORY AND GEOGRAPHY
An Update
Swiss Peace, Bern, Switzerland
NOV 1-2, 2019

Participants drew upon their strained backgrounds, including many years of abuse and torture at some of Syria's most wretched carceral facilities, including the infamous Tadmor Prison, to discuss the unspoken, or repressed, memory and the way these memories transcend time and space for detainees who are either still locked up or on the "outside" living with the same trauma as those on the "inside."

The meeting also touched upon themes of imagination, adaption, and preparation, and the way these have been used to help former detainees bring back repressed memories through a process that connects the fragmented recollections of others who have similar backgrounds of suffering. In doing so, the way in which fragmented memories move from the physical space where the suffering occurred to other venues and times is explored and analyzed.
